Posture

In this photo I’m sitting on the front edge of a meditation cushion. My knees are resting on the ground, therefore my hips are higher than my knees. My legs are crossed with both ankles on the ground. Some people aren’t able to get their knees on the ground, therefore propping them up with a cushion underneath each knee might be helpful.

You don’t need to sit on the floor if this is uncomfortable. A chair is perfectly fine! You can sit against the back of the chair or you may like to sit nearer the edge to be more upright. You might like to sit on a cushion if you’re tall, or place a cushion under your feet if legs aren’t so long. It’s helpful to have legs uncrossed with both feet flat on the floor.

This is the position I find most comfortable for meditating. This photo was taken at a meditation retreat I ran, but you might be able to see that I’m sitting on a meditation stool, which slopes forwards allowing my pelvis and hip to be at a comfortable angle and allows my back to be straight.

My shins are resting on a cushion which allows my knees to be soft, rather than pressing into the ground and, though you can’t see it, my feet are able to drop down off the back of the cushion.

I have meditation benches available (made by my father-in-law at his local men’s shed), which I sell at cost price.
